VOTE – Only 6 days to the interim elections – VOTE

October 30, 2006

You all know I am a Libertarian. You probably also know that the libertarians, while having a viable platform that the public would embrace if presented well, do not put forth viable candidates (Remember Harry Brown anyone? No? I didn’t know who he was either.) . Since I am more interested in CHANGE this election (and in the next Presidential election), I have chosen to vote Democrat this ticket. All Democrat. Whatever you vote, GO VOTE. Our country is in too much turmoil to waste the opportunity to share your voice. Your vote will make a difference. And if your state is a Diebold electronic voting machine state, get a reciept of your vote or take a photo of it with your cell phone or something, because they suck ass.

Comics Come Home XII

October 28, 2006

We have tried for the entire 5 years we’ve been in New England (MA and now NH) to get tickets to Comics come Home. The minor drawback of a person who rarely rises that early on a Saturday (10 AM ticket sale opening day) and a show that sells out in no time has been a big road block. This year, we finally got tickets! That’s where we were all night tonight.

It was a blast! It was in the Agganis Arena at BU, which I’d never been to before. It’s quite a nice venue. We found the venue just fine (495S/93S/Storrow Dr/Commonwealth Ave) after deciding to drive instead of taking public transportation. We’d heard this event tended to run late, and while the T (subway) in Boston runs until the wee hours, the Commuter Rail into NH does not. Lucky thing, too – it started at 7:30 and went until nearly midnight.

We ate at Qdoba Mexican Grill first, which is an assembly line style Mexican place. It sounded strange, but we have learned that the longer the line of people and the more different types of people in line, the better the food, and it didn’t dissappoint. It was not swoon-worthy Mexican food, but we were happy with what we ordered. Plus, we got three tacos, a taco salad, some rice dishes and drinks for under $20 and they made it spicy enough to keep the taste buds happy. You can’t beat that.

We had absolutely awesome seats (Sec 102, Row A) with a great view of the comedians. All 13 of them – there were so many it’s no wonder the show ran long. Plus I got to say a pleasant hello to Joe Perry as he walked by. SQUEEEEEE! In fact, there was some serious Star gazing to be done in general – we were right behind the big kahuna floor seats. Tom Hamilton was there to introduce one of the comedians, too, and that was nice. He’s been successful so far in his battle with cancer, and I’m glad. He looked really good. So did Joe. Yum.

Perry snuck by to play in the show toward the end, playing guitar on the Asshole song with the Asshole Band and Denis Leary. That was fun. Leary also brought his son up on stage to sing with him on another song – a very tall, very thin, very shy teenager gamely banging his tambourine and singing along. :)

Most of the comedians were absolutely stellar. Leary was on his game all night, of course, since Comics Come Home is his pet project, and all proceeds benefit the Cam Neely Cancer Foundation. Steven Wright was there, and he was good, but not as sharp as I remember him being in years past. In fact, out of 14 comedians only one was downright bad, and one mediocre – everyone else kept us laughing our asses off all night long.

There was a local comedian who opened, and he wasn’t bad, but we’d seen him at Nick’s Comedy Stop before when he was better.  I think he was nervous playing with the big boys.

There was one comedian who’s name wasn’t in the program who was great, and I wish I’d written it down now since I am terrible with names and his is gone, gone, gone.

The comedians on the program included: Denis Leary (he has a new Christmas special coming up), Eddie Brill, Bill Burr, Greg Fitzsimmons, Don Gavin, Kevin Knox, Bob Marley, Brad Mastrangelo, Patrice Oneal, Ken Rogerson, Steve Sweeney, and Steven Wright

Of course, since honey and I had congratulated ourselves so heartily on our conquest of Boston streets and not getting lost for once going in to the city, guess what happened? That’s right, we got stuck behind a bus and missed Storrow Dr on the way out, making us – you guessed it – lost. Extremely lost. “How did we get in Dorchester? We do not want to be here!” lost. “Where the hell is Milton!? Did that sign say Milton??” lost. As it turns out we got our selves nearly to the Cape before finding the 93 again.

We made it home at 2:15 AM, then changed the clocks. So my computer may say 1:41 AM right now, but my body says go to bed, so I think I will.
Side note: The event was being filmed for television so when it airs I’ll Tivo it. We were right up front and easy to film so the camera dude kept coming back to us. I’m hoping we’ll be in a couple of shots after the edit is all over, just for fun. :)

Oh, and before I forget:

Dear City of Boston,

Your street signage sucks donkey balls.

Sincerely,

The girl who has trouble getting her Masshole to go to his home state’s big city because even HE can’t find anything there.

Just a Quickie

October 27, 2006

I’ve been neglecting my blog lately. I’ve been so busy, which is good. In addition to clients, I’ve been blogging for a few blogs – this one, my writing advice blog, and two paid blogs I’ve been contracted to do here and here. It’s a lot of fun, really, to share my knowledge of books and writing with people. I also started a writing forum, which you can find in the sidebar of my writing advice blog, The Writer’s Well. It’s pretty new, so not many people yet, but I hope to make it a thriving writing community.

Not only have I been blogging like mad and writing for hours a day for clients, I’ve been trying to quit smoking. And here’s a tip folks: if you read this, and you know me in person, nagging me if I cheat only makes me smoke more. I have a contrary personality. I do not like unsolicited advice (“assvice”). I’m working on it, I’ll do it at my own pace, and I’m not sweating the occasioanl cheater much – just like dieting, beating yourself up over slips won’t help you reach your goal.

Speaking of dieting, I’m doing that too. I know, poor honey. He is a brave soul, coming into the war zone every night after work. I’m getting better a few days into it, but the first day? I was Not Nice. So he gets kudos for being supportive and loving me in spite of my grumpyness this week.

That’s about it, just a quick “where have I been this week” post. Enjoy the linky goodness!

Cool Stuff From the Weekend

October 22, 2006

I didn’t have a lot of time to surf the net this weekend, but thanks to Aces Full of Links I didn’t have to. If you don’t visit this site for the weekly shotgun you’re missing out – JP comes up with some very cool stuff.

One of my favorite things on this week’s list? GMBMG (Give Me Back My Google) – all of the Google search goodness without the pesky ads. I don’t know how long it’ll be up before the Giant One gets wind of it and shuts it down, but enjoy it while it lasts.

Other cool stuff from this weekend includes the new Starbucks in Exeter. MMMMMMMMM Tasty goodness! Plus no more nasty Skunkin NoNuts® tastebud torture. I enjoyed a lovely Venti Skinny White Chocolate Mocha today for the first time in way too long.

Interesting tidbit from Wikipedia on Starbucks:

As a general rule, Starbucks does not offer promotional prices on its products. While it has a repututation for having pricey drinks, as of early 2006, Dunkin’ Donuts actually charged more for a large cup of coffee ($1.95 vs. $1.80 at Starbucks).[1]

When I lived in California and Oregon, I didn’t go to Starbucks. There were so many options for great coffee at funky, cool, independent coffee houses I didn’t need any other options. Here in New England the choices are limited.

Skunkin NoNuts® has worked hard to dumb down the taste buds of the majority of the New England population. In the small town I live in the group of people I was talking to after coming back from Starbucks today are so used to bad coffee they didn’t believe me when I said the Skunkin NoNuts® coffee was always stale and burnt until they had a taste of the Starbucks coffee.

Skunkin NoNuts® also bombs the area with too many stores. I waited five years to get a Starbucks (or any decent coffee house, really) within 20 minutes of me, and finally got one 12 minutes away. I passed 16 (yes, sixteen) Skunkin NoNuts® on the way to one Starbucks.

Anyway, all ranting about Dunkin Donuts’ vile corruption of coffee and breakfast food aside, there is a way to find local independent coffee shops in your area so you can avoid both corporate whores if you wish: just click here and visit the Delocator.

Last, but not least, here’s wishing Emily a safe move to Virginia. We’ll miss you!

The Network Neutrality Debate

October 19, 2006

I had to write for a deadline, so I set the DVR. Honey saw the “your show will go to channel ## in ## seconds” graphic and clicked CANCEL RECORDING. To be fair, I didn’t tell him I was recording something. Still, I missed it. Does anyone have a link to broadcast online? Perhaps a transcript?

Friday the 13th: The Freaky Friday Post

October 13, 2006

In honor of Friday the 13th, I thought I’d post some general freakiness for your enjoyment.

The folks over at ZeFrank: The Forum and EA have been talking about favorite conspiracy theories, all in a spirit of fun. I don’t know about you but I love conspiracy theories. I tend to “collect” them. Some of my favorite conspiracy theories mentioned so far:

The 23 Enigma

We never walked on the moon

Numbers Stations

Toynbee Tiles

Other freaky linky goodness for your Friday the 13th enjoyment:

• A fear of Friday the 13th is called Paraskevidekatriaphobia.

• Snopes, that most fantastic urban legend debunker, offers a timeline of Friday the 13th through the years here.

• A breakdown of the history and legends surrounding Friday the 13th can be found here.

• How about a dose of “do it yourself numerology” to pass the time?

That’s right folks, it’s that time again. Time to try your hand at writing a novel from scratch in 30 days. I’ve signed up for NaNoWriMo yet again, and I hope to see you there.

You can read more about it and find some handy linkage here or here.
